Project Objectives

Promoting a model of sustainable development in the areas affected by tsunami, through supporting and strengthening local cooperative system.

In Sri Lanka the fisheries sector directly employs around 250,000 people and indirectly supports a million people. After the tsunami, the entire industry has been seriously affected, and with it the populations of the poorest fishermen, made even more vulnerable, so the project was born thanks to the contribution and partnership with Legacoop Halieus to give priority to the support of the fishing cooperatives (Fisheries Cooperative Societies, FCS).

The project achieved the following results:

11 supported credit unions;

11 credit unions with reconstituted capital;

60 members (90% women) provided equipment and microcredit facilitated;

1,730 members who will benefit from the capital;

5 multi-purpose cooperatives rebuilt and equipped;

Multipurpose Cooperative Rural Bank of Pottuvil rebuilt;

1 diagnostic study on Sri Lankan cooperative system;

Training, especially vocational training for women.
