On 31st October, Cooperatives Europe, in partnership with ICA Africa, organised the workshop “Growing Cooperatives Globally - Cooperative contributions to international development”. The meeting focused on the role of cooperatives in development processes and is included among the actions prepared and carried out by the Cooperatives Europe Development Platform (CEDP) within the ‘Cooperatives in Development’ project, supported by the EU Commission.

From October 23-25 the World Forum 2013 took place in Lille, France. This year’s edition focused on showcasing how companies together with their stakeholders are successfully initiating real change and adopting new models to overcome the current social and economic challenges. Those changes were clustered into four main areas of action: changing the corporate model, changing the relations with the consumers, changing business practises and changing human resource management.
 
Wednesday, 16 October 2013 - 4pm

On 11th October, the second meeting of the permanent working group on cooperatives set up by EU Commission Vice-President Antonio Tajani took place in Brussels. A group of field experts from national cooperative organisations, some European sectoral organisations and representatives from the EU Commission attended the meeting.

On Tuesday 8th October, during the EU Commissioners’ weekly meeting held in Strasbourg, EU Commission Vice-President and EU Competition Commissioner Joaquín Almunia proposed the new EU energy guidelines for the period from 2014-2020, to be published in November. In the latest draft, the Commissioner had not only dropped formerly included specific support to nuclear energy, but above all, promised to strengthen the framework for renewable energy support.

European Commission President José Manuel Barroso, gave today his annual State of the European Union speech at the European Union Parliament's plenary session in Strasbourg. In his speech, Barroso said: “Make no mistake. There is no way back to business as usual. Some people believe that after this, everything will go back to the way it was before. They are wrong. We will not go back to the ‘old’ normal, we have to shape a ‘new’ normal”.

On 10th July the first meeting of the permanent working group on cooperatives set up by EU Commission Vice President Antonio Tajani took place in Brussels.

Tuesday, 9 July 2013 - 3pm

The Industry, Research and Energy Committee (ITRE) of the European Parliament adopted today a motion for a resolution on the Entrepreneurship 2020 Action Plan presented by Austrian MEP Paul Rübig (EPP).

Cooperatives Europe welcomes the text adopted today, which underlines how the measures described in the EU Commission’s Action Plan should address all types of businesses, explicitly mentioning cooperative enterprises.

Thursday, 4 July 2013 - 2pm

On the occasion of the International Day of Cooperatives, on the 6th of July, United Nations (UN), the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the International Labour Organisation (ILO) released a statement to support cooperative businesses.  

The theme of the 91st International Day of Cooperatives is ‘Cooperative enterprise remains strong in times of crisis’.

Tuesday, 2 July 2013 - 5pm

The European Parliament adopted today a report on the contribution of cooperatives to overcoming the crisis. Italian MEP Patrizia Toia (S&D) presented this report.

The text praises the contribution of the 160.000 cooperative enterprises, which are members of Cooperatives Europe, to the EU economy and for employment stability.

Monday, 1 July 2013 - 5pm

Cooperatives Europe welcomes Croatia as today, July 1st, this country has become the 28th Member State joining the European Union. Cooperatives Europe also welcomes the fact that now Croatian cooperatives will be able to join the working group on cooperatives set up by Antonio Tajani, Vice-President of the European Commission in charge of industry and entrepreneurship.
