    On June 26th, Cooperatives Europe and Rescoop organised the high level policy conference ‘Big energy: Small Energy? The role of cooperation for the EU’s energy transition’. The event was held at the European Commission as part of the EU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW).

    On 16th April the EU Parliament rejected the EU Commission's proposal to raise the price of carbon by delaying the auctioning of emission allowances. Prices of allowances will therefore remain low at least until 2020 -unless the Commission will take urgent actions against it- and the ETS (European Trading system) will thus not help reducing green house emissions until then.

    By organizing a workshop at the World Forum Lille, Cooperatives Europe brought cooperatives to one of the world largest forums for socially responsible enterprises. The title of the workshop was ‘Empowering people around the world through the cooperative enterprise model’ and chaired by the Director of Cooperatives Europe, Klaus Niederländer, two cooperatives from Europe and Latin America presented concrete examples to the delegates of the cooperative difference in this area.

    On the occasion of Co-operatives United, the culmination event of the International Year of Cooperatives, Cooperatives Europe organised a series of events on cooperatives and renewable energy in Manchester. On october 31, the film 'The fourth revolution' was projected, followed by a discussion with the audience. On November 2, together with Rescoop.EU and The Co-operative Group, Cooperatives Europe organised three panel discussions on renewable energy cooperatives and how to set them up. The events were oversubscribed proving the great interest in this topic.

  • Wednesday, 17 October 2012 - 4pm

    On October 10, 2012 Cooperatives Europe director Klaus Niederländer took part in an international strategy meeting of 40 European policy makers and experts from 15 European countries as well as Canada in the north of Denmark. This parliamentary hearing was organised by the World Future Council and the Climate Service Center, in order to push forward the renewable energy transition in Europe and on how to actually achieve it.

    Cooperative enterprises put forward a decentralized energy system as a better solution for today’s energy challenges. To bring this discussion to a wider audience, Cooperatives Europe will host three workshop sessions and a film viewing to look at the idea of bringing Power to the people. Bringing together diverse panels of experts and key actors in the renewable energy field, we will explore how cooperatives are reshaping the energy market.

The objective of the event – “Power to the People: Can citizens lead Europe’s future energy strategy?” – was to create lively and in-depth debate on the key question of how citizens can guide EU energy policy.

    On 23 April Cooperatives Europe opened the European Co-operative Week with the conference ‘Co-operative contributions to the EU 2020 strategy’, organized in collaboration with the EU Commission. The conference was aimed to highlight the social and economic importance of co-operatives.
