    The new Union of "Macedonian Association of Agriculture Cooperatives" has just been created, an inauguration that introduces a reinvigorated element into the panorama of co-operative development in the Balkan region. Indeed, the Union is born out of a democratic decision of its now-members.

    Cooperatives Europe, COSV and other co-operative unions and experts from Europe have served as a motor for the dynamic engine that drove the establishment of this new Union.

    Cooperatives Europe releases today its brochure on CSR - Co–operative Social Responsibility. The document provides insights on how Corporate Social Responsibility is not new to co-operatives: as co-operatives have always behaved in a social responsible way. It is in their DNA.

    Being socially responsible is not just a nice label for co-operative businesses, it is fundamental to the co-operative culture. That’s why co-operatives call it Co-operative Social Responsibility. The brochure gives concrete examples on how co-operatives:

    On 23 April Cooperatives Europe opened the European Co-operative Week with the conference ‘Co-operative contributions to the EU 2020 strategy’, organized in collaboration with the EU Commission. The conference was aimed to highlight the social and economic importance of co-operatives.

    On 13th March 2012, the European Parliament adopted a resolution on the Statute for a European Cooperative Society with regard to the involvement of employees. In his press release, the rapporteur , Mr Sven Giegold stated that “Cooperatives also have a vital role to play in delivering the EU’s 2020 strategy, notably in the areas of social cohesion, climate protection and sustainable management.

    In the wake of the International Year of Co-operatives, UK government announced today a new consolidated Act for Co-operatives. This announcement, made by the Prime Minister David Cameron, means that the 17 separate pieces of legislation governing the sector, much of which dates back to 1965 and has been developed piecemeal, may now be consolidated into one Act. The announcement comes at the start of the International Year of Co-operatives.
