Gender equality and diversity

Cooperatives Europe is committed to fostering an inclusive and equitable environment for all in line with the core cooperative values and principles. Cooperatives Europe’s board has identified gender equality as one of its strategic working themes and is dedicated to carrying out actions in that matter.

In this thematic area, we work to ensure that all individuals, regardless of gender, have equal opportunities to contribute to and benefit from cooperative enterprises.

We aim to:

  • Promote gender balance within our organisation and the broader cooperative movement, at all levels of decision-making
  • Support initiatives that empower women in cooperatives and encourage women-led cooperatives
  • Provide resources and training to cultivate a more inclusive cooperative culture
  • Our Gender Equality Charter outlines our vision and concrete steps to address gender disparities. At Cooperatives Europe, we strive to make diversity and inclusion a tangible reality in all our actions and initiatives.

“Cooperatives can be a powerful force for women’s economic and social empowerment. By working together and supporting one another, women in cooperatives can achieve great things. However, they cannot succeed through equal opportunities alone. It requires intentional action that recognises and addresses the unique needs and experiences of every woman.”

    Our Gender Equality Charter

The Gender Equality Charter is a cornerstone document that reflects Cooperatives Europe’s dedication to promoting gender equity. It establishes clear guidelines and objectives aimed at creating an environment where gender diversity is not only valued but actively encouraged.

This charter addresses crucial aspects of workplace equality, including balanced leadership representation, fair compensation practices, and policies that support a healthy work-life balance. By focusing on these areas, we aim to remove obstacles that may prevent the full participation of all genders in cooperative enterprises.

Through the implementation of these principles, Cooperatives Europe seeks to foster fairness and equality. Moreover, we believe that embracing gender diversity enhances innovation and strengthens the resilience of the entire cooperative sector.
